Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing these treatments should be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you become starving," described a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural support.
